Im not a big proponent of the cell phone photo BUT I took 3 trips up the east coast this year from Virginia Beach to Maine, 2 of which I took with WRV to deliver surfboards. We stopped each trip in New Hampshire at a surf shop called Cinnamon Rainbows. I left and ran across the street to check the waves immediately and snuck up on this old couple sitting on the bench. The second was late September, much colder and obviously the start of the vacant off season.

I dont know if I opened up my camera or did a bad job keeping this roll away from the light but I thought these two actually looked pretty neat with all the leaks. I got pretty lucky with all of these, they were all shot on the bulb setting in poor/dim light. The one of Gary (the true Scotsman) was all fire lighting. The top was Heather, Chase and I in the bathroom on New Years at our house, where we had a fire, drank some, all gave speeches and then some others started shooting guns in the backyard...ridiculous. The last photo is Ashley and Hollis in her new studio space, before renovations. Will be cool to see how the art spaces turn out. Carry on!

Revenge Run + Life Experimental Roll 35mm

I took a small, light and easy plastic 35mm film camera on the run because I didn't want to lug my old Cannon SLR around. It was relieving to have it flapping around my neck while flying down the road with everyone, not worrying about a thing. The lens was plastic so most of the images came out really soft and not so defined but I dig it for motorcycle adventures. The last 3 photos here are outside or around the house Ive lived in the past year here at the beach. Lucked out having an acre yard in an 80 year old barn house in Virginia Beach -unheard of. My room mate Chase is a TRIP by the way and I think the more motorcycles I ride, the more I want to get into riding my bmx again. Just saw Jordans post over at the horse and got REALLY REALLY amped. It was surely a pleasure meeting him and some others on the trip (though it was a while back its still in my brain) So in similar fashion I'm giving a shout out to the guys down in NC at black sheep misfits - They couldn't have been more hospitable, cool and helpful to my friends and I. Costa Rica 120mm

Got a color roll of medium format back from the trip to Costa Rica with Casey - where we later met the best guys, got superior waves and over all had a seamless trip. We started with absolutely no plans but to surf. In Costa Rica, a place that is fairly easy to navigate and cheap to get around, things worked out just fine for us. If you ever make it over to Mal Pais I suggest trying out Don Jons hostel. Ruth (the keeper while we were there) kept the place very clean on a daily basis, was very happy and was pretty much a cool sister who knew more then you did and took care of about 8 guys simultaneously. Ill be going back :]

Crappie has been traveling the country giving speeches as uncle Joey from full house while Bass has been working on a serum to induce peaceful sleep. Of all the places Ive been so far nothing beats Maine. A place where the ocean is right near a forrest, a place that truly feels like its own, a place where houses are made perfectly out of wood - not vinyl siding...a place where people seem to take time to do things right. The surf community I encountered both trips were always extremely helpful, excited and pure. There wasnt one style, it was just the heart of surfing you could dream of 50 years ago. A place where people talk to you in and out of the water - sharing knowledge, excitement and love for the same thing. Only once did I get a stink eyed look - from a hipster with a mustache of course. "That was the first hipster Ive seen in 5 days, and hes the only person this whole trip who had an attitude," Eddie. Other then that it was typically, "Hey are you those guys from Virginia Beach!?" I even ran into guys I had seen and met on my first trip with WRV who remembered and welcomed me back. We surfed everything from long knee high longboard lines to over head river mouthed point breaks with seals. Thanks a lot to Vic and Josie at wheels and waves surf shop and the guys over at oceanview campgrounds also Don at K.O. surf shop and Jim for the company :] see you again soon.

This gas station ended up being our home for about 4 hours, but I cant forget more then anything the weird bags off dried up cotton candy they had for sale. The bags were still puffed up about a foot in height but had a mini ball of ancient faded pink cotton candy dried up in the bottom...and dust layered the potato chips. Gas station in a zombie movie?

One of my very best friends and my favorite person in the world to play music with passed away a week after I got home from Costa Rica. I wrote 2 people while I was gone, my girlfriend and Taylor. I was debating even putting this up, or these photos because I still dont want to believe the truth of the matter. The further time goes - the more I start to realize that he is gone and its not that I just have not seen him in a while. Life is 100% worth living and I have not ceased to believe that - there are so many places to go, so many people to meet, so much good music to play or listen to, and too many funny dogs to laugh at to think otherwise. Dont ever neglect the things you love or that keep you happy and remember your friends ARE there.

The first 3 photos were all taken with a kodak disposable water camera around sunset at 62nd street steel pier in Virginia Beach. The waves were absolutely horrible but we managed to have a blast thanks to Sam Cocke and Freedom surf shop for letting us ride all sorts of whacky boards. Then the one of Tony was supposed to be a group shot but ol Billy was too busy laughing on his stomach in front of me. It was a great morning anyway...look at Tonys face damnit! Hes so happy! The last one was from the same morning, Billy Jaquis took of me with his water cam. Surf early with your friends, then go get breakfast together.

I still have a lot of film/photos from the trip to scan or develop and whatnot - however here are some water camera shots. The intention usually with the water cam is to take pictures of you and your friends surfing...but it rarely works out because its hard to do both. You'll lug it out there, put it in your mouth, or stuff it in your little pocket and before you know it, summer is over and there are STILL somehow photos left on the damn thing. So of course not too many pictures of surfing but some good happy people shots and water visions for those who cant swim! Most of these are around the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica. Cabuya, Los Cedros, Mal Pais, Boca Barranca, and Santa Teresa.

Period correct exposures for how I imagine old motorcycle photos. These were all shot on a crappy 35mm camera TIME magazine gave away with new subscribers years ago. Favorite pictures are of walt - he looks free and stoked, another thing I relate to motorcycles. My Triumph broke down about 4 hours before getting home but with some help from my nearby cousin he picked me and my bike up. He let me stash it at his house for a few days, while he gained a bottle of moonshine and crown. I then rode home on the back of parkers Honda 500 for the rest of the trip (thanks parker) The trip was great and we met the nicest coolest guys ever in North Carolina, Black Sheep Misfits. They helped steve out with his broken springer and helped the rest of us out with great attitudes, pizza and beer. The highlight of the trip for me. Motorcycles are good.

Electrical CB200 / CB175

Last week I got commissioned (hah) to fix a 76 CB200 for a guy I just met named Jordan. The bike seemed for the most part alright but it was'nt recharging the battery. This was my first electrical fix on a bike, aside from re-wiring the BSA and other small things here and there - so I wasnt very excited. Like most people I too hated electrical work on bikes, or anything really but I wanted to get over it and accept that electrical too, is NOT impossible. Through everything I learned a ton, Im not afraid anymore of electrical issues and I should hopefully be getting a surfboard shaped out of the deal (Jordan makes boards.) I will gladly fix a motorcycle for someone for trade offs like these. POS fun, late night ride with craig, revenge run coming up, summer, camping, surfing, gardening...good things friends, good things.

Im going to make a silent promise here, no longer will I have anyone else develop or print my photos if they are black and white... a darkroom set up is a top priority for this winters list of projects. I cant stand seeing how digitized these pictures become after the developing company scans the negatives for quick, easy, low quality prints. Proof - its hard going from having a darkroom to trusting someone else to do a good job with your stuff. Self sufficiency is a goal.

FINALLY getting some film back! The bulk of these above were from New Orleans, the last picture was St. Augustine Florida, marking the first jump in the atlantic for the upcoming summer (it was March here) Running into the water for the first time without a wetsuit is a pretty big deal if you love surfing as much as us. Josh got this frame, engine and some other parts from a guy down the street 2 months ago (if you scroll down you can see where it used to be) but today its finished and we're all about to go ride! He called me this morning to help him get it out of the workshop. That was a funny task, the stupid front end is almost as long as his whole shop. Ive never seen so many funny wooden ramps created in my life. We think we might have a weekend cleanse - play cards on the lift before there is another project up there then get back to work. Jeff has been on a steady progressive path I'd say since hes gotten home from the peace corps. Someone asked me what hes doing for work the other day and I said, "do you mean what is his source of income or what is he working on." Anyway, he has been speaking with some city officials about trying to get a space where we could hopefully start some community ran bmx trails that the city would support, not tear down. There is some hope, and this past Saturday, Dave, Jeff and I did a trash clean up at one of the possible spots. We'll probably be doing more clean ups in the future, maybe around watersheds not just lonely woods...so if youre around and you want to grab a bright orange bag let me know!

Since the eastern shore post, I have rowed across another amazing lost hideout, magical layer, special place, an 18 year old dream hangout or a 26 year old's dream living/recording location. Cory and I had intended on going on a kayak exploration through back bay just to drink high life and discuss the lenght of his mustache but a wise redheaded soothesayer led us to believe if we traveled in the wrong direction, went over a series of trees, under insane amounts of limbs with spiders and ticks all over our legs we would eventually come to an abandonded peace lodge. True story - after feeling like a white boy in the amazon and paddling past 2 aligator gar it really was there. This sounds like Im writing a paper for school doesnt it? Anyway this place is pretty amazing to me, it was dirty on the inside with dust and all but we spent the better part of the day cleaning it out with the 2 old brooms we found in there. It has a wood burning stove! Im really wishing I knew about this place during the winter. A perfect hideout.

Eastern Shore

Josh and I both have off work on wednesdays so today we rode our bikes up to the eastern shore. I made a quiet promise to myself to never post cell phone pictures anywhere really, but I couldnt resist. Let me tell you a little story, one of Josh' objectives on this trip was to ride down a random dirt road and see where it led. Who wouldnt want to do that really? So we found that road and it led us to a bunch of trees. We parked our bikes and realized there was an abandoned shack with no door... Above is what we found, "UNCLE RAYS LOVE SHACK," fully loaded with the flag, sweet compound bow, stuffed deer heads, camo bookbag, some dirty couches, wood burning stove. I want to meet Uncle Ray. We also saw a boat graveyard, a million houses worth living in, an empty pool, green fields, good smells, good food with cute girls. Im a fan. GOING BACK!

This is Workmans Comp. volume 1 for the workshop of Josh Nowell.

Here lies the progression of things. Its winter, take some time and make a tape for a friend, dont give them a CD mix...that shit only takes a few minutes. Put your heart and time into something and the reward should be greater...maybe? In my mind yeah. Id much rather someone give me something they worked on then some plastic turd their itunes popped out. Just an idea because winter sucks and we could all use a little boost! When friends give me art or something art related as a gift I always love it, thanks to the ones who have drawn me giraffes, frogs, squirrels, given me mixes, shared their photos, music, trails and skate spots with me. Its all the same in my mind.

Im probably not the right person to talk about anything because I dont read the newspapers on a daily basis or follow the stock market or pay too much attention to anything outside of what I consider important. But I do observe a ton of things from my immediate life and do have values that Id say are important and help me base decisions on how to TRY and do the best thing. To me friendships are important, love or trying to love is important, trying hard is important, doing is important, quality is important, compassion is important...good quality again is important and its easily detectible but maybe not the easiset thing to explain but we all know what good quality is. I think the fact that this whole economy is a mess is a great thing...here is when all the genius minded out there step in to say the Native American is an idiot but to you I say slow down.

Something is wrong and its apparent, but I hope as a whole we're seeing this and luckily the lack of money and jobs are face slapping proof of the problem. The problem is the problem...that sounds stupid im sorry but once again, the problem is the problem. What is everyone worried about? MONEY. Imagine if there were more important things to worry about, I dont think we'd be stuck here. If we as a society werent so worried about money I dont think we'd see tons of cookie cutter neighborhoods made quickly out of cheap materials, I dont think we'd see as many "safe bet" chain stores popping up everywhere providing us with materials and goods from low quality companies or shitty food that has nothing to do with providing us solid nutrition but more so something to fill us up a second, make us fat and cost them nothing to create. I also dont think Id be staying up this late listening to audio recordings of guys talk about the interworkings of major record labels and how important record sales are (im doing freelance for a music company at the moment). I would love to hear good music that is mainstream again...music that was written for the sake of necessity, someone being passionate, pouring their heart out, being AMAZING. Not an overwhelming creation of music that is safe and being written just to sell. That defeats the point and helps explain why music is becoming such a disposable part of our culture. Hell everything at this point in time seems to be disposable because there is no quality behind it. Things have been made to sell. Made to sell. Made to sell. Of course im talking about big time shit here not your small bike company or local surfboard shaper that the majority of the world has disposed of because we've been trading quality for money. This loss of quality has supplied us with a zombie world. So much of life around me seems so dead and I want that to go away. We shouldnt have to dig for shows that have real music pumping out of a basement, it should be on the radio. I think everyone deserves to hear a record not just the superb indie kids and honestly I dont think we've been advancing as a whole I think we've been degressing as a race and we are currently in the process of realizing that.

The picture above is of my Dad, his brother and cousins years ago. Those bikes lasted forever, his dad fixed cars the right way and if it broke down again Im sure he fixed it for free. Those kids got to grow up IN the world not DETATCHED from the world on a computer (fuck im on a computer right now) They grew food and caught snakes they were learning things about life outside and being attatched to the world not CYBER SPACE!

They read books and listened to the radio. TALK RADIO, you ever realized how good of listeners those people are!? I wonder why. Thats enough from me. I tried to say what I was thinking and what I feel around me and see. Do a good job at what you do because you want to do a good job and you care. Not because your job is going to give you money. The bellmen at the hotel I work at make terrible tips because they stopped doing a good job. They stopped caring about the person and doing a quality job, they started worrying about the tips...and what happens? They get stiffed all the time. Thats an economic crisis.

Josh is my best friend. His birthday is october 8th which he likes to call "octagon" 8/8...rediculous. Thats kind of how he pulled emily, his soon to be wife, he told her his birthday was octagon and that was that. This color, Ive never been able to get it with any other type of camera. Bad thing is, now if you get the "dreaded film" processed at target or wherever the color is gone because, whats a good way to save time and decrease quality? lets convert as many things into the digital world as possible. I always go into that crap but its true! This was Vaughn and I walking down into false cape sometime a few falls ago throwing driftwood.

Bottom picture is Drew and I walking down the beach in mexico about to surf this crazy rock reef. See that steel building being built in the background? when we passed it there were 3 mexican construction workers on the very top of it with no harness or ANYTHING yelling at us with this wildness. It kicked ass they were at least 30 stories up eating chips and were pretty pumped to see some guys come out of no where with surfboards. We were pretty pumped to see guys eating chips that high up like it was no big deal!

I met Vaughn about 7 years ago, he chewed on his tounge and was trying out my new guitar. We were friends ever since...we've played and recorded tons of music together and had obsessions with metal then the drift into folk, and psychadelic lands, who knows...I always hope musicians constantly shift...if you stay exactly the same as a musician then how are you progressing? Anyway hes primarily the reason I set sail to Austin in the first place, though he and I's musical quest at the time didnt quite take form I had a great time and am glad that I quit school for a 3rd time to do so. He just got done doing a tour in Alaska (asshole) and Im finally finishing my degree. Im sure we'll play music one way or another together at some point in time and we'll always be friends, hes one of those. Ive always liked these pictures so I figured it was time to scan them. If youve met Vaughn before Im sure you have a story to tell, if you havnt the dude is awesome, he has a tree in his parents backyard in West Virginia with he and his first loves initials traced into it.

Knowing this I made an attempt at scanning some 120 mm color negatives today and then converting them to images...but so far its not happening. Here was a crappy attempt. Deer and I get along

This has been proven to me many times, this probably falls into second place for best deer + wes moments. The first being, a baby deer ran up to me from the woods in Austin, sniffed me a while then sat between my legs, it was amazing. Today my friend Josh and I rode bikes all the way down to wash woods from sandbridge and this deer and her fawn had absolutely no problems being a foot or two away from us. The gravestone is from the washwoods cemetary, most of the graves are from 1910, the whole area is really intersting...basically it was a community of people living on the beach whom survived a shipwreck and made their homes out of the wood from the boat. insane.

Ive been working non stop on my bike, not so sure if working is the right word. Ive been learning, restoring, thinking, putting together, fixing and breaking, this bike for the past few months. I bought it in October but had to put it off because of school, finally school was out and the bike was up. Ive learned more about myself, life (and mechanics of course) in a few months then I had in the 6 years Ive been in college. honestly. Id love to say im DONE working on her but, its a 1969 BSA victor, so its old, its british and its not the most consistent bike on the planet but, this is the best its ever been and im stoked. Go buy some piece of shit motorcycle and a manual, dedicate some time to it and youll be blown away. Or just jump into some shit youve never thought about REALLY doing but interests you and actually DO IT. Its worth it, better then getting fat at a bar and wasting your money on piss. No high horse I promise just trying to motivate.

I was having so much fun that I only shot maybe 5 pictures with my "real" camera, these are from my phone. The trail jam was a blast though lots of good people hanging out and riding, good grilling, thanks to those who provided food beers and dirt jumps. The next day balls evan and I took a spin on the mountain bike trail...that was awesome, never done that, give it a shot if you havnt... its awesome just dont fall off the side and lookout for snakes trying to ride your bike. friends of derek make him play drums.. he can do that without his left ankle..he rips and is fun to play with, I'll bring your set up next time if you want. for real.

Something is way wrong with the scanner today but I cant complain because...well I dont have a scanner of my own. So for some reason all these are fuzzy I blame this rectangular shaped machine to my left...Anyway we got lots of style here, Charlie even claimed he had the best "trail hair" of the day. If you can talk about trail hair...whatever that is hahaha then it must have been a good time. Thanks for coming up guys I had a real good time, should be seeing you all more often and soon. The trees up here are getting green and fluffy and I keep seeing cardinals hopping around together. Outside is looking real good.

This culture was living in Radford Va studying the mystifying frog whoppers of one Bob Junkfood and the pancake styles of Mr. Derek Jawface. Im not gonna lie, I used photo shop for the first time on some of these pictures. I usually just crop them but because these were color I had to do some editing to try to get them back to normal. Teotihuacan Mexico, I talked to this guy for a long time he sells these really rad bird whistles (of course I bought one) and rides to the pyramids everyday with 6 other guys in one car to sell this stuff. He was a good man and took my picture. I was a total tourist.

I got this tent from my old science teacher in middle school, its been a lot of places, here on the beach in Acapulco. Its now in Katy's closet in mexico but shes taken it out on a few spins already. hell yeah!

Ive gotten some new paper, some Ilford multigrade glossy and some Ilford warmtone fiber based paper, so the prints are starting to look much better...the paper I had before SUCKED.

So Ive been working on this thing since the fall alone and I finished it today on my birthday! Perfect timing, that whole line is going to be fun...really fun youll have to see it to understand. No pics yet. Erik and I dug all day...cleaned up jumps blah blah blah. Everything is looking really nice. Things are a lot cleaner and nicer then these pics show. As long as it doesn't rain we'll be digging pretty consistently so this trail jam should be happening late April. YEAH!

Sunday I got to dig ALL day, Id say one more solid layer of good dirt on this never ending berm and its done...can finally start making that line happen...and Erik and I re-built the 2nd and 3rd jumps from the main line. Looking REALLY clean, wider and bigger. Kind of intimidated but will jump, look too nice not to its just been a LONG winter of little biking for me. So trail news coming more frequently now...Planning for a trail jam April 17th I believe we said, more news on that in time. stoked.

I shot a roll of fuji supra 100 color in Mexico with my holga, and a black and white roll I havnt finished yet. Not exactly what I was hoping for but still fun. You never know with these things. I'd say about 80% of the taxis down there are old VW bugs, pretty awesome. The pyramid is from Teotihuacan, I went there one day by myself while katy was at work and got robbed at gunpoint on my way back to Mexico City on the bus. Crazy story. The sunset was from Acapulco on the camping adventure... and the limes are from the market!
